Thai Ambassador to Abu Dhabi headed Thai delegation to attend the 3rd Session of Preparatory Commission for IRENA
On 17th January 2010, Amb. Somchai Charanasomboon and Mr. Twarath Sutabutr, Deputy Director General of Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, Ministry of Energy, and other delegates from Thailand attended the 3rd Session of Preparatory Commission for International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) at Emirates Palace Hotel, Abu Dhabi. In this regard, the Royal Thai Government had entrusted the Ambassador to head the delegation at the said meeting.
Thailand has attached great importance to the issue of renewable and alternative energy, of which, has become one of the Governments top agendas under the guidance of the Ministry of Energy. Domestically, the Thai Government has promoted and supported the usage of renewable and alternative energy while active roles have also been played in the international arena. Presently, Thailand is still an Observer in IRENA pending internal procedure to become the full and founding Member of the organization.
The aforementioned 3rd Session Prep - Com meeting on 17th January 2010 emphasized on the structure of IRENA in all dimensions and the next meeting was set to take place in Spain in November 2010. Upon conclusion of all relevant discussions, IRENA will become the newly emerged International Organization with its Headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
The delegation had an opportunity to visit MASDAR City, the place where there will be zero carbon emission and an alternative and renewable energy will be utilized to accommodate the residents. The City is due for completion in 2016. Moreover, on 18th January 2010, the Ambassador led the delegation to join the Opening Ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit which witnessed the presence of Heads of States and Countries Representatives including the Presidents of Greece and Maldives, the Prime Ministers of Turkey and Malaysia and the Crown Princes of Spain and Denmark, as Keynotes Addressers. The Summit also displayed exhibitions on alternative and renewable energy of both public and private sectors from all over the globe.
